Local-grown artist and author Maira Kalman mentions her hometown, Riverdale, in her latest “And the Pursuit of Happiness” Opinion blog about the shared and ever-evolving journey to America on NYTimes.com.

We all may not know Kalman’s name, but we all have seen her work. Kalman’s former NYTimes column “The Principles of Uncertainty, May 2006-April 2007, has been turned into a book; she’s designed New Yorker covers and fabrics for Kate Spade and Isaac Mizrahi and her work is part of Riverdale’s own fabric — she created a mural of Wave Hill shown in the Perkins Center and her designs of birds and flowers decorated the signature T-shirts, capts and tiles sold in Wave Hill’s gift shop.
