My goal for today: to keep enough cash in my pocket for tomorrow’s Inwood Greenmarket, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays on Isham Street at Cooper Avenue (next to Church of the Good Shepard). It’s not Union Square, but it’s a fresh taste of it close to home. We have friends who have been going ever week since the beginning of the month (the market operates July through November) and at their nudge, we went took a quick trip down on the BX7 and loved it, too. It felt so summery, and strangely “citylike,” to linger there and carefully pick out a few gems to plan a week’s meals around. I’ll be there tomorrow with a wish list.
I had a mini mushroom quiche from one of the bakers that was really delish. Friends have been buying wine from the New York winery on hand and report they’ve been enjoying it. Tons of organic produce, breads, eggs, artisan cheese, milk and seafood. I feel like I want to pick up basics and then do the rest of my grocery shop around what I find on Saturdays.
Ice cold apple cider is one of my children’s favorites and one sip of his made me look forward to the bushels and bushels of colorful apples that should be there this autumn. I have not yet been to the Youth Markets on Thursdays at the Riverdale Neighborhood House and in Marble Hill, at W. 225th St. and Broadway. Anyone have a scouting report?

I think they are also planning to offer some events at the Inwood farmer’s market such “ask the farmer” , “learning to compost” and possibly some musical entertainment.
I like the Hastings farmer’s market. They have activities for kids (yoga, story telling) and also, pickles on a stick, which can’t be beat! There is also a knife sharpener there most Saturdays. If you don’t have a car, you can just take the Metro North and the farmer’s market is a quick walk uphill (you’d have to walk up the hill anyway because there is free parking for the market in the station lot).
“Pickles on a stick” sound like something that needs to be seen first hand. Also like idea of knife sharpener, I have a few that need some attention. Thx
