I’m missing the New York Times’ The City section already. Gray Lady execs said March 30 that they’d cease printing the Sunday section within weeks … word in NYC media circles then was City had four weeks left to go … so that means that next Sunday, essentially, the gig is up. At the time execs said some neighborhood stories, like the urban/folksy ones the City section championed, could find their way into the paper’s New York section (others could find their way to The Local, a blog NYT launched earlier this year for areas of Brooklyn and NJ. The City Room blog does include some coverage of local government-related issues).
Why so bummed? Unless someone takes another arrow in the chest or an errant truck runs into a Henry Hudson overpass, Riverdale has little chance, outside of the Real Estate pages, of its news and people being considered truly “Fit to Print.” Eight stories concerning Riverdale ran in the City section in the last year, including the closing of Paperbacks Plus, ConEd’s slow work pace, and residents trying revitalize a stretch of Riverdale Avenue.
Newspapers are not in a good place, I know this intimately. However, I’m going to miss the surprise and warm feeling that washed when seeing Riverdale’s news shared with the rest of the big city.
So, with our heads bowed by the dim light of our computer monitors, here’s another look at Riverdale’s last City story:
